urban Food Forest: The lab

‘The Lab’ is the original experimental grounds for YEG Food Forest. This project converted a back yard lawn, overtaken by quack grass and weeds, into a productive perennial food forest. This food forest attempts to grow every fruit and perennial vegetable that can be grown in north central Alberta.

urban Food Forest: front yard

This small food forest replaced an aged ornamental landscape with apricots, currants, gooseberries, strawberries and grapes. This food forest will attempt to convert the existing ornamental crabapple tree into an edible apple tree with strategic grafting.

Design & DIY mentorship

This client is newly retired and wants to build their landscape themselves over a period of seasons. Our design process extrapolated their vision, values and resources for the project. With the design in hand, the client has the ability to select certain contractors to provide specific services (ie. tree removals and patio construction). The design also guides the client in ordering material for his project with accuracy, ensuring his project can stay on budget. YEG Food Forest is providing ongoing mentorship throughout the client’s construction journey.

Acreage Food Forest: front yard

This project converted a front lawn into a productive food forest that highlights the simplicity of long term maintenance when a project is planned properly. This linear food forest is built to facilitate automated irrigation and to simplify mowing and mulching. As a result, this highly productive system was expanded into a renovated shelterbelt beside the house. This system is now ¼ acre in size and will produce all the fruit and berries needed to feed a family throughout the year.

This food forest was designed around a very specific maintenance program: Using chickens to mow and manage vegetation. Spacing between rows were designed to accommodate pasture raised chickens in chicken tractors. This management system brings incredible fertility to the food forest by having the perfect concentration of manure being placed adjacent to the fruit trees and shrubs in the food forest rows.
